What actually changed
Starting January 1, 2025, new AC systems manufactured in the US must use lower-GWP refrigerants like R-454B instead of R-410A. That's real. It's a federal rule (EPA AIM Act). It applies to NEW equipment manufacturing.
What it doesn't mean: your existing AC isn't illegal. R-410A isn't banned for use in existing systems. You can still get it serviced, recharged, and repaired. The rule applies to what manufacturers can build going forward, not what you already own.
This is the part that gets twisted. Some contractors present the manufacturing rule as a reason your existing system needs to be replaced now. The rule change is real. The "you have to replace your whole system because of the refrigerant" pitch usually isn't.
